Who are Vintage Olympus?

Vintage Olympus (Contact Us) are based in the UK in the seaside town of Deal. Our studio is a 5 minute walk from the beach, this probably explains why a seascape features so much in our product pictures!

We are a small part-time team of two. Matt a professional photographer and Becky his partner. Matt launched Vintage Olympus having been a professional photographer for over 25 years. Throughout his career, he continued to use film in his personal work and collected vintage cameras since working part-time at Jessops when an art student.

With the ever-present rise of digital and AI photography, which often feels sterile and overly polished, we wanted more people to experience the sheer joy of using a vintage film camera and the authentic look of film photographs.

Why Specialise in Olympus? Matt noticed in his collection of vintage SLRs, compacts, and 1/2 frame cameras, how often Olympus cameras were near the top of each category. Having always respected Grays of Westminster for their dedication to the Nikon brand, he thought it would be fun to launch an online retailer specialising in Olympus.

Whether you're a seasoned film photographer looking to add a classic Olympus to your collection or a curious newcomer eager to explore the tactile experience of film photography, you've come to the right place. We are more than just a retailer; we are part of a vibrant community celebrating the art of tangible images created with some of the finest cameras in photographic history.

Vintageolympus.com was created from a simple desire: to preserve and share the legacy of Olympus film cameras. We specialise exclusively in the iconic models designed by Olympus's legendary engineers, such as the compact and revolutionary OM-Series SLRs (including OM10, OM-1, OM-2, and OM-4) and the brilliant point-and-shoot cameras like the Trip 35 and mju series. We understand the unique experience of shooting with analogue film photography because we are analogue film photographers ourselves!

Here's how we grade each film camera, lens or Accessory

We carefully inspect, test and refurbish every Olympus camera, lens, and accessory to ensure it meets our high standards. We use the following grading system to describe their condition:

  • Excellent (Ex): This Photographic gear is in exceptional, near-mint condition, especially considering its age. You'll find only minimal signs of use, such as a few faint scuff marks. There are no significant scratches, dents, or other blemishes.
  • Very Good (Vg): This item is in lovely shape with only minor cosmetic wear. It may have some light rub marks or very small scratches on the body, but no significant dents or dings.
  • Good (Gd): The item is in great, fully functional condition, but shows clear signs of use. You can expect some noticeable wear, such as scratches and small dents or dings on the body.
  • Average (Av): This gear is in full working order but has obvious signs of cosmetic wear. You will see noticeable scratches, dents, and dings.

All cameras, lenses, and accessories come with a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 3-month mechanical warranty so can purchase from us with absolute confidence and peace of mind.

📸 Film Photography Frequently asked questions

What is Analogue Film Photography?

Analogue film photography is a traditional method of capturing images using a camera with light-sensitive film and a chemical development process to create a physical negative or print.

Is Film Photography Expensive?

Unlike digital photography, where you can snap countless photos for free, each click of a film camera comes with a cost—from the price of the film itself to its development. This cost implication encourages the film photographer to slow down and consider every shot with greater intention.

You can lower the cost of film with the many new budget film stocks, re-spooled cinema stocks and Out - of Date films. All can lead to some incredible creative results and significant savings.

Where can I buy Film?

We supply two of the best brands right here: Ilford for Black and White and Kodak for Colour Negative. But one of the best parts of film photography is to discover all the wonderful and varied film stocks now on the market.

Where do I get my Films Developed?

Online labs and High street Camera Shops. We recommend the following...

Nik & Trick - Cool little camera shop on the Kent coast.

Analogue Wonderland - The UK's biggest selection of film and developing options.

Is Film Photography hard to do?

No, it's really easy!

It is hard to get anything really good, and that's the fun. The unpredictable nature of film, is where the magic happens. You never truly know what you've captured until the film is processed. This element of surprise is the very thing that makes film photography so captivating and, at times, frustrating. It's this unique blend of control and chance that you'll come to love and hate.

What happens if I accidentally open the Camera back?

This is a major problem as the film is sensitive to light and most probably fogged and ruined. It's definitely not recommended but, I do know some photographers who have accidentally fogged films and photographic papers and had amazing results from these happy accidents.

How do I know these old Cameras still work?

If you're buying a film camera, check that it's been professionally checked or film tested. Ideally it has new light seals fitted and you have the ability to return it to the seller if you're not entirely happy. That Mamiya 7 MK2 you see on ebay is cheap for a reason!!

What is a Film Camera Point & Shoot?

Small,Compact and easy to use. Olympus were the best in the World at these Cameras and we stock some of the best designs. They're small enough to take anywhere and they do all the exposure calculations for you. You just snap away!

What does SLR Camera mean?

Single Lens Reflex: It's a type of Camera design, most often with an interchangeable lens. This allows you to fit very long lenses for subjects that are a long way away, such as Sports or Wildlife. Or wide-angle lenses for landscapes and Travel. The camera uses a prism and a mirror to allow the photographer to see what the film will record prior to the photograph being taken.

What's a Darkroom?

A darkroom is a lightproof room used for developing photographic film and printing photographs. It can be used for Colour or Black & White, but has a stronger association with Black & White hand printing. Want to try out a Community Darkroom? Ilford Photos - Find a Darkroom near you.
